What is IP (degree of protection) IP (International Protection) protection grade system is drafted by IEC (International Electro technical Commission). Lamps and lanterns shall be graded according to their characteristics of dust prevention, foreign invasion prevention, water resistance and moisture resistance. The foreign objects mentioned here, including tools and human fingers, shall not touch the live parts in the lamps to avoid electric shock the IP protection level is composed of two numbers. The first number indicates the level of the lamp against dust and foreign invasion; The second number indicates the tightness of the lamp against moisture and water intrusion. The larger the number, the higher the protection level. The protection levels indicated by the two marked numbers are shown in Table 1 and table 2.
Table 1: the degree of protection indicated by the first marked characteristic number (number)
First identification number | Protection level: | Definition | Remarks |
0 | Unprotected | No special protection for external people or objects | IP0- |
1 | Prevent intrusion of solid objects larger than 50mm | Prevent human body (such as palm) from accidentally contacting parts inside the lamp. Prevent foreign objects with large size (diameter greater than 50mm) from entering | IP1- |
2 | Prevent intrusion of solid objects larger than 12mm | Prevent people's fingers from contacting the parts inside the lamp. Prevent medium-sized (diameter > 12mm, length > 80mm) foreign objects from entering | IP2- |
3 | Prevent intrusion of solid objects larger than 2.5mm | Prevent tools, wires or similar small foreign objects with diameter or thickness greater than 2.5mm from invading and contacting the internal parts of lamps | IP3- |
4 | Prevent intrusion of solid objects larger than 1.0mm | Prevent tools, wires or similar small foreign objects with diameter or thickness greater than 1.0mm from invading and contacting the internal parts of lamps | IP4- |
5 | Dustproof | Completely prevent foreign objects from entering. Although dust intrusion cannot be completely prevented, the amount of dust intrusion will not affect the normal operation of the lamp | IP5- |
6 | Dusty | Completely prevent foreign objects from invading and completely prevent dust from invading | IP6- |
Table 2: degree of protection indicated by the second marked characteristic number (number)
Second identification number | Protection level: | Definition | Remarks |
0 | Unprotected | No special protection for external people or objects | IP-0 |
1 | Prevent dripping | Vertical drops of water (such as condensed water) will not cause harmful effects on lamps | IP-1 |
2 | When the inclination is 15 °, it can still prevent dripping water from entering | When the lamp is inclined from vertical to 15 °, the dripping water will not cause harmful effects on the lamp | IP-2 |
3 | Prevent the intrusion of sprayed water | Prevent rain or damage caused by water sprayed in the direction with an angle less than 60 ° from the vertical | IP-3 |
4 | Prevent splashed water from entering | Prevent water splashed from all directions from entering the lamp and causing damage | IP-4 |
5 | Prevent the intrusion of sprayed water | Prevent water sprayed from nozzles in all directions from entering the lamp and causing damage | IP-5 |
6 | Prevent the intrusion of big waves | Lamps and lanterns installed on the deck to prevent damage caused by flooding due to strong waves | IP-6 |
7 | Prevent water intrusion during immersion | If the lamp is immersed in water for a certain time or the water pressure is below a certain standard, it can ensure that it will not be damaged due to water inflow | IP-7 |
8 | Prevent water intrusion when sinking | The indefinite submergence of the lamp can ensure no damage due to water inflow under the condition of specified water pressure | IP-8 |
